Registered members work closely with physicians to ensure patients receive the best cardiac care. This includes performing a number of diagnostic tests on the heart including: 

• Electrocardiograms (EKGs/ECGs)
• Exercise tolerance tests (ETTs)
• Holter monitor application and analysis
• Event monitor application
• Ambulatory blood pressure monitor application
• Nuclear exercise tolerance testing
• Stress echocardiography
• Pacemaker interrogation and programming

The cardiology technologists in this province started out under the Cardiology Technologists Association of Nova Scotia (CTANS) until, during the summer of 1991, a group of them formed an executive committee with the intent of creating an independent association in Newfoundland and Labrador. 

On September 11, 1991 a meeting was held at St. Clare's Mercy Hospital to discuss the pros and cons of such a move. It was decided that an association should be formed and a questionnaire would be sent province-wide to give every technologist the opportunity to voice their opinions. The majority of the membership of Newfoundland voted in favour of forming its own charter and by-laws.

On October 11, 1991 a letter was sent to the Nova Scotia association to declare that as of January 1st, 1992, Newfoundland would officially have formed its own charter. The president of CTANL expressed sincere gratitude for all support and help received from CTANS over the years.
